Music Therapy

Advantage Health Systems is proud to provide patients with music therapy services, facilitated by board-certified music therapists.

“Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program,” (American Music Therapy Association).

Music therapists are trained to assess the needs of a patient and provide an individualized approach utilizing live music interventions. Studies have shown that music is the first external sensation associated with a developing fetus, and the ability to listen to and benefit from music is the last sensation associated with transitioning patients.

WHAT DOES HOSPICE MUSIC THERAPY LOOK LIKE?

Live Music

Music therapists provide live singing and instrument playing for a variety of goals. Patient preferred music stimulates reminiscence, while live musical accompaniment allows the therapist to adapt the elements of music, such as volume and tempo, in the moment based on the needs of the patient.

Relaxation

Our credentialed music therapists are trained to utilize Music Therapy Relaxation Techniques (MTRT). According to research, patients receiving music therapy can experience a decrease in agitation, anxiety, and perceived pain, while increasing comfort and relaxation (AMTA).

Communication

Research demonstrates that music stimulates verbal and non-verbal responses (AMTA). Patients are able to process their emotions, participate in positive life review, and develop meaningful connections.  Music can elicit non-verbal responses as well, including facial expressions, eye contact, and movement.

Song Writing

In a joint effort with the patient and our credentialed therapists, songwriting provides opportunities for healthy emotional expression. No musical background is needed for a patient to participate in songwriting interventions. Songs written by the patient can be recorded and given to families as a lasting, positive memory of their loved one.

Music Therapy helps enhance the overall quality of life for hospice patients. Evidence-based goals utilized in music therapy hospice care may include (but are not limited to):
